my buddy took his 86 22re 4runner to a guy to fix a exhaust leak now he is losing almost 1 to 2 quarts of oil a day YES a DAY.
as of now we think he has a cracked head and he priced a rebuild on it around 800$ to 1200$
so we found a 22r that came out of I think a 84 or below for 150$ can we swap motor fairly easy or is this more complicated then rebuilding his 22re
and can the EFI fit on a older 22r pre 85

the 22r has 130K on it.
this truck is his work truck and he needs to get it back on the road fast like by the end of this weekend or is this all too crazy too do in 3 days.

i think you'll need to tap a hole for the knock sensor? and a couple of other minor differences. i know the efi will bolt up. the blocks/heads are basically the same structurally. and of course you wont need the mech fuel pump.

if both inexperienced with engine swapping, it could very well take more than a weekend especially because you don't always have/know what part(s) you may need to replace or wether or not they are available to you. if it were me, download a fsm and read it over with your buddy before you dive in.

if you have'nt already, be sure to check everything else to be sure that the work you are preparing to do is a necessary venture. (the fsm should help with that too) may the force be with you...

It will be far quicker and easier if you can find an '86 or newer head and rebuild it. Check the local wrecking yards, Craigslist.com for your area, or the for sale forum here, on Marlin.com, or Pirate4x4.

well I talked to him this morning and he said that the guy that did the previous work can rebuild the whole motor for 600$ that is a complete rebuild kit of some online web page he did not know the sites name when I asked him or it might be coming from ebay not sure

then the guy is going to have the block re milled I hope.
to have the head re done is 175$.
the guy is going to rebuild the whole motor for 200$ in labor.

word to the wise if you have a leaking exhaust do not put larger bolts in with out re tapping them first.
that is the one thing this guy did not do.

right now I am trying to get my buddy to bring over his truck tonight and take off all of the pulleys and brackets so we can find the leak before he pays this guy more money to fix his truck.
who knows it might just be a cracked timing cover or front main seal...

So you know,
If the motor from the 84 is actaully an 84, then the block and head are different that the 85+ 22r's. Enough so that the EFI may not bolt on as nicely as origionally thought.
Not saying it can't be done, just that it may not run smoothly because of differences in port shapes, etc.
Check out that link to the babcox webpage, it will tell you practically everthing you want to know about the 22r series motors.

ok well I got him to come over and not buy the 22r decreased his motor again got it all dried off started it and let it idle and no leak the instant he gave it some gas oil started flinging off of the crank pulley shut it off and inspected the whole front of the motor no oil from the head.

so we looked a little closer at the crank pulley and oil was dripping so we pulled the radiator and fan to inspect the front main seal got everything out and he went to loosen the crank bolt and it was LOOSE since we where at this point we pulled the old main seal it was worn and old.
put in a new one I had laying around put the sucker back together torqued it to spec filled it all back up with fluids started it up and saved him a ton of $$$$$
no leaks now I am gald he listened to me and came over he was going to take the extra head I have over and get it
re done today but he waited

now we have to find out how a bolt that should be torqued at around 119 flbs loosened up after the exhaust was fixed witch we had to tighten some bolts on and had to change.
