Ok, we were talking about adding a second fuel tank to the Trooper to run Bio Diesel or WVO. I thought everyone knew this but I guess we have some new blood who don't. So, here's what you do.

First get yourself a short bed Isuzu pickup tank. One of the 13 gallon ones. Here's mine mounted on Melissas old frame.

If you had the pickup bed off it would look just like this. Although this is a my Trooper frame. The two frames are that close.

Now when you snag this tank, cut the round tube cross brace at the rear to get the rear tank mounting bracket. Once you get home you can grind the tank bracket off the tube. It will weld onto the Trooper cross tube just like on the Pickup. You can still see where I welded it to the Trooper brace.

Here's a side shot to show you that it does indead fit under the floor. The hole with the little holes around it is for the sending unit.

The front of the tank will sit on top of the frame cross brace but you will want to add a 1/2 square tube under the tanks front lip to raise it up to level. Then just drill the bolt holes through the square tube and the frame cross member. You'll need (2) 1/2 inch longer bolts for the front mount, but how hard is that to do?

Once it's mounted you will need to relocate the fuel filter. No biggie, and add a fuel transfer switch. Get one that also switches the vent and return lines along with the fuel. About $75. at JC Whitneys. It's been a while since I bought one so it may cost more now. Look in the truck section.
The filler port is under the fuel filter in this picture. I plan to move the fuel filter in front of the tank along the inside of the frame. The filler port is behind the body mount although it doesn't look like it.

As far as how to fill it, that's up to you. If your only going to be running gasoline and you just want more capacity, then put a "Y" pipe just under your filler cap behind the inside panel and run a second hose down to the new tank. You can angle the gas station nozzel to hit either hole in the "Y" to select wicth tank gets fuel.
I did this with a pickup I built with saddle tanks and loved it. No crossing over the bed to fill both saddle tanks on the old 74 Chevy I had.

A couple of 90 degree bends, a little fuel hose and some hose clamps and your golden.

If your going to be running veggie oil and want to fill them with different fuels then there are two ways to go. One is just snag the filler door off the pick up and do a little body work to add the second filler door to you body where ever you want. Or put it behind the stock fuel door and put them side by side in the same area.. That's how I'm going to do mine. The interior gaurd will have to be remade bigger and the floor hole hogged out a little to fit both hoses in there. But again. Not Rocket Science.

The best part of this is you can run a dpdt toggle switch and switch on the dash, or wherever, and switch the sending unit at the same time you switch the transfer switch. That way you can still use the stock fuel gauge in the stock location to monitor both tanks volumne.

Cool huh?

p.s. For us Bio diesel guys use the little tank for the dino diesel and the rear main tank for the Bio Juice. See how far you can go with it. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Class Dismissed!

The troopers sold in Australia (as Holden Jackaroo) had twin tanks fitted standard.

One filler in front of the back wheel, the other behind. Probably using exactly the same tank you've got there.

That's interesting info there. Any chance you could get us a picture of where the second filler door was installed on those Aussie Holdens?

Here's the JCWhitney link to the Pollack fuel transfer valve.
You can buy this valve from NAPA and a few other Auto Parts places, but this is easier to post.

It's gone up $5.00 since I last bought one.

That is interesting, thanks Curtis. I had no idea that adding another tank was this simple. I would like to hear more about the second filler door when you get to that point.

I may abandon the underhood WVO tank in favor of this one if I can work out a good filler system. The main reason I was going with an underhood tank was to eliminate the possibility of spilling WVO in the truck's interior (most people run a plastic "tank" in the cargo area when setting these systems up) which would be one awful, disgusting mess. I had not seriously considered adding another tank underneath until now.

As an aside, that frame looks amazingly clean. It is certainly a different world up here in the north with the road salt. my conversion Trooper is in good shape for a Minnesota vehicle, but it's nowhere near that clean. I plan on buying a very nice southern/western Trooper if this project works out and swapping the diesel gear into that one.

Yeah, second tank is optional in Aussie model. I have seen it in the 2 door Jackaroo but not on the 4 door yet. The fuel gate is on the quater panel just behinde the door. I'll see if I can find any photo for you.

OK, found it off the internet

I was thinking that the dual filler would only work as described by Dougal on the 2-door body...

HEY ADRIAN, ANY YEAR OF THE 81-87 SHORT BED PICKUPS HAD THE SMALL TANK AND THE 84-85 TROOPER THIS WAS THEIR STANDARD TANK, 86 WENT TO THE REAR MOUNTED TANK, I DID ONE OF THESE YEARS AGO LIKE THIS AND IT WOULD HOLD ALLMOST 35. GALLONS OF DSL IN AN 86 TURBO TWODOOR , THAT THING WOULD WEAR YOU OUT ON A TRIP, IT WOULD RUN SO LONG,, I HAVE NOT VERIFIED THAT THE LATER 88-95 PICKUPS WITH THE SMALL TANKS WOULD FIT BUT THEY ARE VERY SIMILIAR , IF YOU HAVE A PICK UP IT IS JUST ABOUT AS EASY TO REVERSE THE INSTALL, AND USE A LARGE TROOPER FUEL TANK IN THE REAR OF THE PICKUP, NOT A HARD SWAP AT ALL, AS THE FRAME S ARE THE SAME WIDTH AS THE TROOPERS , JERRY

I haven't seen a four door with the two fillers. Maybe they ditched the second tank or maybe they just plumbed the two tanks together.
About the four door timeframe this country started importing vehicles directly from Japan, so the Aussie spec vehicles weren't as common.
