An ECU for a diesel engine? What does it control and how?

Works pretty much just like a gasoline injected engine, except no spark control. Replaces the distributor style injector with electronic injectors fed from a common high pressure fuel rail. ECU controls timing and amount of fuel to inject based on different input sensors.
