Need a Spot
I want to transplant a C223 diesel into my 89 Trooper, GM V-6 model; 8th vin digit "R". I understand there were several engine/transmission combinations for the Trooper. I cant seem to find any information to verify the C223 will bolt to the GM bellhousing. The intent is to make the conversion to biodiesel and keep the truck for my hunting rig. Anyone here got some ideas or experience with this?
Thanks in advance,
Whitney

The diesel will not bolt to the V6 bellhousing (or the 4-cylinder bellhousing, for that matter). It requires, for all intents and purposes, its own specific transmission as the bellhousing is part of the transmission case.

You would need to obtain the complete diesel engine/transmission from a donor diesel Trooper.

If you can find one of these your golden. It's the front bell housing & transmission case for the MUA5. It bolts up to any MUA5 and bolts to the back of the 2.2L diesel. The dirty transmission in the picture is a 2.2L Turbo Diesel. Notice the starter is on the drivers side.
But like it was already said, best bet is to just find a 2.2 L diesel and tranny conbo.

Just happen to take this picture this weekend.

Curtis - What is the source of that transmission case? Is it from another C223-powered Trooper?

It looks a lot like the case my 4JB1-T transmission has. Wonder if the bellhousing pattern is the same?

The same? It's actually the same bell housing you got with your engine tranny combo. IIRC you have a MUA5 behind your 4JB1-T. But I've never seen a 4JB1-T up close.
I know it's rare.
I have a new MUA5 I put Tera Lows in just for the 2.2L TD / MUA5 application. I've been collecting parts for this 86 Troop for over three years. Even have an 89 frame to put under it.

Did you ever compare the bell housing on the 4JB1-T to the transmission you pulled out of your truck?

I'd love to have a 4JB1-T for my 4 door Trooper project. THis way I should be able to bolt in the 4JB once I get my hands on one.

Only problem I have now is too many projects and not enough time to work on them all. But, it's getting better!

I see. I thought it looked familiar. Where did you get it?

My transmission is an MUA5. Aside from the front half of the case, it is identical to the transmission that came out of the truck (except possibly for the gearing - have not checked that). I've got a page on my site showing the bellhousing differences.

Will it bolt to the C223? Or are the bolt patterns different?

I understand this all too well. I've got an E-Type Jaguar restoration waiting for me once this Troop is finished.

That really looks like the same housing on my rig. My starter is on the driver side too. I looked at the pictures on acy76s' page and my gas engine, case definitely doesn't look like his. I really want to keep this trooper project because the truck is in great shape. I found a 4JB1 diesel here http://tinyurl.com/38wxej
I have the skills to do this I just dont know the troopers well enough to plop down $2K and risk a mistake. If I take some pictures and post links to them would someone be willing to help me figure out what it is I really have and what will work for me? I bought this Trooper at an impound auction so I really dont know any of the history, it may be a Frankenstein creation for all I know.

thanks in advance,
Whitney

Adrian

I got it from Jerry years ago. He's out of them now. He had two when I got this one from him.

Yes, It will bolt up to the 2.2.L

I saw your pictures of the two bell housings on your blog and I'll take a picture of the engine side of mine and we can post the pictures up side by side. I even have a 2.8 bell housing I'll get a picture of, for comparison.

This should be an interesting tibit of tech.

Curtis

The 2.8 V6 engine is a GM unit, and the bellhousing on your transmission is unique to the V6 models. I believe it's a 60-degree GM pattern, but I am not a GM expert.

As an aside, the Oldsmobile 4.3l V6 diesel (from front-drive cars only) will bolt to the V6 Trooper bellhousing. A forum member started this conversion a few months ago but gave it up before completion.

Be careful of those ebay engines. Like most others I have seen, this one appears to be a medium-duty truck unit. Notice it has a 2WD transmission (and the shift lever is angled for what appears to be a cab-over application) and no turbocharger. I have talked to that seller in the past. I found his prices to be high and he could not even guarantee the engine would come with the proper transmission! I would look elsewhere.
