I just replaced my power steering pump today. Sure is nice to have that back. Anyway when I was in there I noticed that the little plastic pod on the bottom that has a couple vacuum lines off of it was broken. The plastic nipples for the lines were broken off. Steering seems to work fine again with out it so I was wondering what this piece does?

A picture would be helpful, but sounds like it might be a pressure switch that bumps up the idle a bit when the power steering pressure gets above a set value.

that is a vacuum switch that idles up the motor when turning the wheel just make sure the lines are capped or they will suck in crap into your intake

Just RTV over the vacuum lines and away you go.....unless it's a show truck, then pull the switch and go get a brass plug..... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I would be more worried about the engine running rough and burning valves then sucking crap into the engine.

It is an "idle up" valve for when the PS is working hard like at lock so the engine will not die. I found where the two lines go into the intake. I removed one and looped the other into it place. As far as a plug, I had to plug off the valve hole. I tried the RTV but mine was leaking fluid so I removed it, broke the plastic off, and brazed up the hole. If you do not have access to a find a metric thread brass plug for it. Do not try a metric bolt, it is a metric tapered pipe thread.

I would plug the 2 lines in the manifold. If you loop one to the other, won't it be on high idle since the line will be open?

Yep, you need to cap the un-used lines:

[Linked Image]

If looped (and not plugged) the vacuum at the idle up valve will open it and bump up the idle speed (that is a good way to test the idle up valve BTW):
