Getting the Wheeling Fever

1985 22R, trying to remove my exhaust manifold to fix an exhaust leak. There are two copper pipes attached to the top of the manifold, that flange up to two pipes that run behind the block. I think they are part of the EGR system. I can not get these pipes to move enough to allow the manifold to slide off. I can not see behind the block to tell if I can disconnect the pipes there (if I cant see em, how I would wrench on em I dont know). Anyone got some tips or suggestions? And please, dont tell me it would be easier to pull the engine!

If it's like my 20R setup, that copper pipe snakes around the rear of the block and attaches to a coupler at the lower right rear side of the cylinderhead. The trick is to loosen/separate the pipe there, and the pipe should then be able to move out of your way at the exhaust manifold. Good luck.

Yes, they are bolted to the head on the back of the engine, but no need to unbolt them there. Just unbolt them from the manifold and use a pry bar to slightly bend them outa the way. Not really a big deal.

Thanks guys, I was considering the Sawzall option, but actually worked out Scerb's method, managed to pry them out of the way just enough. Hope I did not damage anything!

Well, I will guarantee you that the pry bar damaged a lot less than what the sawzall was gonna

I removed mine with a sawzall my egr stuff didnt work anyway yeaahhh.....those pipes don't go to your egr system. they go to your air injection system. anyways, i just unbolted them from the smog pump when i put my headers on. i didn't want to risk breaking anything. only took a couple of seconds. but i used a flex head gear wrench, idk how easy it would of been w/ a ratchet. i also have a 2" body lift which makes things easier. although i did chose not to unbolt the clamp from the back of the cylinder head b/c i didnt want that back plate to start leaking.
