Ok A magnetic pickup. To be honest I have never seen one zackly like that one. Anyway I cannot recall seeing one. It will require it's OWN sparkbox.
You will have to install the one out out of the donor vehicle if it is different from the one you have now.

The nutter bypass is only for for 258 with the computer controlled carb. You do not need it on the 360. What you will need is a flywheel specifically balanced for the 360, it it came with one use it the 258 will fit but will cause vibration. Also you will need the complete motor mounts from the V8 on a CJ the 6 and 8 rubber mount parts are different and one of the steel mount that attach to the frame is also different, I think the passenger side is the one but I,m out of town and cant check. Also V8s make a lot more heat so the 6 prob came with a 2 core rad and you will need a 3 core at least. Just order one from a 304 equipped 1980 cj7 or maybe your local rad shop will be able to modify yours. That T4 will blow up, it is just a question of when. Consider looking for a T176 or a T18, go to Novak adapters they have lots of info on that stuff. Having said all this, you will love the V8 it will really wake up your jeep, except of course for the gas mileage.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
hey old green,
Yeah, I already did the install, I used the flywheel and passenger side motor mount from the donor vehicle. I was thinking of trying to rebuild the T-150 from the donor vehicle or finding a T-18 somewhere, but don't want to spend all summer without going for a ride.

Big Jim, I was looking around online and saw a write-up on bypassing the computer for a 80's 304 V-8 with a 3 wire distributor. I assume this means that I could buy a stock distributor for a 80's V-8 and install it on my earlier V-8 to match the wiring... thoughts?

I just found a distributor at Napa online for a 1981 wagoneer 360 V-8 that has the same connections as mi CJ... unless there are any objections I think I'll give this a shot...

You will have to get the sparkbox for that 8 cyl also. Or just stuff an aftermarket dist and coil in there.. I'd be checking prices and compare to see what I'd do.
You may be ahead with a dist with an advance built in and not depending on electronics to do it for you.
Any more just swapping the engine is not enough. Lots of wires and electronics must be thought of before the swap is complete.

I have been following this thread out of curiosity and just a thought, but since he does not have the original spark box, and may or may not be able to get the box and the wiring to hook it up, what is the general thought about dropping in a HEI type distributor, like the DUI ones? Then its just a one wire hook up and he is good to go.....

Just my 2 cents.

Sean

I have no problem doing that if it is the most reasonable solution. In my research though I looked up the ignition module for a '81 CJ-7 w/ 258 and an '81 Wagoneer w/ 360, and they are the same part number. The distributor for the '81 Wagoneer has the same hook-ups as the '81 CJ distribtor, and since the 360 block didn't change during that period I figured that the '81 Wagoneer distributor would work in the earlier engine if I plugged it into the '81 ICM. I am a newbie, but the Napa distributor is $70 and the DUI's seem to be about $400, so I'm testing every angle to try to make this work...

Body Damage is Cool
The 360 uses the same ignition module (sparkbox) as the 304. And those are avilable at any auto marts store (probably have to order it) for less than $25. They're not the most sturdy beast in the world, despite being encapsulated in epoxy. After replacing a few, I now carry a spare in the back of my CJ7

1977 CJ-7, fiberglass body, AMC 360 w/ headers, DUI ignition, Edelbrock intake and Holley 4150 carb, TF999, Dana 300, 4.56 gears lockers, York air comp, 4" susp lift, 2" body lift, BFG 35" M-T tires, Megashifter, AGR pump & box, REP8000 winch.

I know that the 304 and the 360 have the same ignition module, but from all I can tell the ignition module from the 258 is the same as well... so unless there is something that I am overlooking the one that is already in my 81 CJ should work with an '81 360 distributor... right?
