Originally I was going to get some 16x10 Mickey Thompson classic lock wheels and some 33x12.5-16 Super Swamper Boggers. But now that I worked out the numbers that combo would stick out way to far.

So check me on this. If the 16x10 wheel has a backspacing of 4.5" then it will stick out 5.5" from the wheel matting surface and if the 33x12.5 tire has a cross section of 12.8" it will stick out 1.4" past the rim. So that combo sicks out 6.9" from the wheel mating surface.

My current combo stick out about 4" from the wheel mating surface and that fits perfectly under the fenders, not sticking out at all.

So the 16x10 and 33x12.5 combo would stick out 2.9" from my fenders so that may be to much and could lead to issues with the front fenders and turns.

So now I'm looking at going with the 16x8 Mickey Thompsons that have a backspacing of 4" with either the 33x10.5 or the 33x12.5 Boggers. The 33x10.5 Boggers have a cross section of 11" and the 33x12.5 Boggers have 12.8"

So the 16x8 and 33x10.5 combo would stick out 5.5" from the wheel mating surface or 1.5" past my fender.

The 16x8 and 33x12.5 combo would stick out 6.4" from the wheel mating surface or 2.4" past my fender.

So what do you guys think?

Your calculations seem accurate. I would definitely go with the 8" rim. Either tire should do fine on that size rim. It comes down to preference on tire width. I remember some people going from 10.5's to 12.5's and wanting their skinny tires back.

I hope the boggers will be trail tires. They're not fun on the road <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" />

This seems off to me. If it has a backspacing of 4.5", then it should stick out 5.5" (4.5+ 5.5= 10) Unless I am missing something.

Either way, I would go with the 8" rim. An 8" has more flexability in sizes that are more appropriate for our trucks. You can go from a 265/75-295, or a 10.5-12.5" wide tire. the 10" is mainly good for 12.5"+ That means that if you ever decided that the 12.5" had too much drag, or was too wide, you would have to sell off the 10" rims.

Just my $.02

It's been about 1 1/2 years but no they still have a good bit more then half the tread left since I have pretty much stopped driving it it conserve tires.

But now I'm looking at doing a 3" body lift soon and I just want bigger tires and new wheels.

Ya I goofed there, fixed it now.

So now the difference between the 16x10 / 33x12.5 combo and the 16x8 / 33x12.5 combo would be 0.5", 2.9" or 2.5" past the fenders.

I have been leaning toward the 16x8 / 33x12.5 combo but now I'm kinda considering the 16x10 / 33x12.5

I'm just a little concerned about putting the 33x12.5 on an 8" wheel. At almost 13" wide that tire would be about 5" wider then the wheel.

I wouldn't worry about that. I ran 33x12.5's on 15x10 rims, and I felt the rims were a bit too wide, and prevented me from airing down as much as I would have liked. You're probably going to want to air down the boggers pretty low to get them to flex better. They are very stiff.

with a 12.5" wide tire you definitely wanna go with an 8" rim. Anything wider and you're gonna have bead issues when aired down.

I am running 35x12.5 on 15x8 wheels...all that sidewall doesn't do wonders for snappy highway handling, but is good for rock crawling!

BTW having the wheels stick out the wells some isn't necessarily a bad thing...around here you get into a lot of woodland ravine wheeling, which involves one side of the truck hard against one side of the ravine...having the tires out there can be the only thing that saves the whole side of the body from (much) damage.

Body Damage is Cool
the best rim width for the street, to me, would be one which matched the tread width. That would keep your tread flat on the road, and would wear evenly. off the road, it's better to have a slightly narrower wheel to keep the bead seated at trail pressures. the trade-off is less even wear (will likely wear down the center faster than the edges).

For my trail rig, I'll be running a 13" wide tire (probably a 10 or 11" tread width) on a 7" wide wheel until I can afford some beadlocks.
