How about starting by giving us an idea of what you've got under the hood. Ver' helpful.

Most likely it is the head gasket, you wont know for sure until you pull the head(s), depending if it is a 4 or 6 cyl. It could also be a cracked head or block, but most likely it is the HG.

If the smoke smells like a rotten pumpkin and is humid, it's likely burning coolant. Could be a few things, one of which is a HG.
If the smoke is blueish white, then it is burning oil. Of the likely candidates, it could be valve seals....

thanks for the reply's.the truck has a 22r.smoke comes out of the exhaust.if it was black and a diesel it would look cool.but it's not.it has 138000miles on it.maybe i will pull the head and check it out.smoke is white and smells like antifreeze and humid.the good thing about it is when it does it makes it easy to find exhaust leaks .so do you think i should have the head rebuilt while it is off?

I would have a shop measure and clean the head. I just took mine off to clean up the valves and put new valve stem seals on. Luckily, all my valves, stems and springs were within specifications, the valves seated great, and did not need replacement. The head was flat too, but it's worth getting it inspected and getting the valve stem seals replacement.
Do you know how long it was since your timing chain was replaced? Have a look at the guide and see it has been chewed up. If it is and your timing chain cover is gouged, you may want to pull your oil pan while you are in there.

i took the head off today and took it to a shop.heads no good.must have had tap water in it.water ports where almost into the seal for the cylinder thats how much they have been coroded.so maybe that was my problem area?and wow there where some head bolts that didn't want to come out of the head.so i orderd a new head today.going to be burning tire soon i hope. .so guys watch the ph level in your antifreeze.hard water doesn't like aluminum.

This is a very common problem with 22Rs. The water jackets are very close to the cylinders and many of the castings are thin in this area. So, it never hurts to remind people to change their antifreeze. It is certainly cheaper than the alternative.
