I just did my '89 Amigo 2.3L a couple weeks ago and getting the tranny off was a serious PITA. I finally got it out by tying a rope around the tranny just before the shifter box, and pulling from the back of the Amigo where I could get my feet on the frame for leverage. In hindsight, there could've been a way to tie it to the rear axle and ratchet it out.

The only thing I got out of the screwdriver method was a broken screw driver.
