Hi all,

I was trying to check my TPS this past weekend as I'm having horribly erratic acceleration and power and certain RPM's/gears (auto tranny).

Following Roger's instructions (awesome write-up's btw), I noticed there is supposed to be a dashpot assembly. Upon easy inspection, my engine lacks this assembly completely. There is just a gaping hole there.

My question is this:

If this is supposed to prevent backfiring, and my truck has never backfired, what is the real purpose of this?

Will I notice an improvement anywhere in engine performance if I buy the parts and add this back in?

If anyone has the part numbers or two sense about this issue, please let me know.

According to the FSM, Manual trans were fitted with the dashpot. Not on the automatics.
I would look at the TPS and or ignition system for your troubles

I think it is more of an emissions device, probably prevents a little HC going out the pipe every time you shift gears. I've not had any smog check folks look at mine, so if your engine otherwise works fine, leave it off. I find mine helps a bit with it's internal spring to help push the throttle open which is tricky with the early 22RE throttle linkage:

to my knowledge, the dashpot prevents the throttle from slamming shut when shifting gears.


87 22R PU, 2? body lift, 33? BFG muds, 4.88's, F&R Lock-Rights, Rancho Shocks, EB's Street RV Head w/ 268 Cam, LCE Header, 2" to 2 1/4" exhaust, Flowmaster 50 series, Magnaflow high flow cat, complete Herculined SR5 interior, V6 BB, MC, and calipers.

Only the manual trans 22re have the dash pot. And yes its there to prevent the the throttle slamming shut when shifting. There is a procedure for adjusting.

When you let go of the gas pedal the dashpot keeps the throttle open for a second or 2 to help burn off any excess fuel. Its an emissions device. My 89 5spd 22re had one but the adjusting screw had been removed. When i put an adjusting screw in and set it to spec (2000rpm for mine), i quickly realized why the previous owner had removed the screw, the dashpot was stuck and wouldnt allow the idle to come down back to normal. This caused high idling and when i would press the brakes the rpms would go up and down. So i bought a new one from the dealership (about $50) and installed it. I noticed an improvement in driveability when shifting gears. With the throttle staying open for a lil longer it helped make the gear shifts smoother. Just my experience.
