need to replace the auto hubs on my 88 4runner the locking springs broke in both hubs un known when purchased and found out the hard way at the bottom of a hill . i have looked around and see the the warn hub conversion works but from everyone i ask says there crappy and break unlike aisin hubs. so are the aisin hubs off the same car compatible or am i stuck with the warn options

You can use the hubs off of any IFS rigs from 86-95. The biggest problem with the Warn and other aftermark hubs is they are not set-up for the "cone washers" and have a tendency to work loose. This causes the studs and locating pins to shear off.

Definately stick with factory AISIN hubs. The swap is easy. As mentioned, just find ANY 1986 to 1995 pickup or 4Runner (do not get anything 1985 or older because they are different). I have done this swap a few times. You can often find hubs for sale on Ebay or on these boards. Typical pricing for a complete set of hubs, springs, washers, nuts, etc... is about $50-$100.

I've converted a few 1990-1995 4Runners from ADD hubs to the manual hubs, and it's actually helped fuel economy by about 1-2MPG as well. Your year 4Runner is lighter though, and probably won't have as much of an effect on MPG, but I would still expect to see a slight improvement. With fuel costs the way they are (we went over $3.00 today), the hubs will pay for themselves in no time.

I also recommend staying away from the Warn hubs. While I've never used them, I've heard nothing but bad things about them. If I recall correctly, they stick our real far and are prone to getting whacked, and they use some plastic parts....

He shouldn't see any improvement to MPG. He has auto hubs, not ADD. So, his axles are already disengaged in 2WD.

Any updates on this? Does someone have a more detailed discription of the auto clutch removal than the one in the link? Are the parts in the photo at the link above the only parts I'll need?

"The kit consists of four 54mm nuts, two larger washers, and two locking washers."

Lastly...is there any special 'clocking' between the wheel hub, the manual hub and the hub cover?

Thanks everyone... I've had the manual hubs on a shelf for a while and it's about time I got this done!
