What are you considering 'better' mileage? With our stock 2005 GMC Sierra 1500 crew cab, we get 16 for average mileage, 12 when towing the camper trailer, and about 18-20 on the highway with cruise on and 70 mph.

If your 97 is lifted and has bigger tires, I'd estimate 10-13 would be a reasonable mileage guess. If you want better mileage than the 'teens, consider a smaller truck like a Toyota 2wd.

Read up on throttle body spacers and replacing the air cleaner with a K&N. I've heard this gets a little more milege and power out of those things.

I dont know why Clay thinks its funny as he is a Chevy mechanic and has no advice. Come on Clay give him a little teaser advice at least.

I was just saying read up on it, maybe a Chevy mechanic that has knowledge about this stuff will help you. These guys are serious about Chevys. I saw a few posts about performance. Post up your questions. Good luck.

Increasing its air flow is supposed to help and the exhaust should be opened up as well.

Fine.

There pretty much isn't anything available in the aftermarket that will give you both power and economy. It's basically a brick with an underpowered, inefficient v-8.

There is an updated MPFI available for it. It replaced the poppet system used previously. It's possible that you could get both an increase in power as well as economy, but I wouldn't spend $900+ on a maybe.

K&N air filters cause all kinds of expensive problems, I never recommend them.

Throttle body spacers don't help. They cause problems that can only be cured by removing the spacer.

You may be able to find a Hypertech programmer for it. Some people have mixed luck getting better power and better economy at the same time with those.

The bottom line is this; there is no magic bullet fix that will get you both at the same time. There are things you can do that may seem to work for a while, but in the long run you'll pay for it in other ways. Usually, it's more expensive than living with it the way it is.

Quick tip; never buy aftermarket spark plugs for a GM engine. GM engines work really well with ACDelco plugs and not much else. I couldn't tell you why. Nobody seems to know.

Ive heard that too and for the record I dont use them(I change my filter too much), but some guys swear by them. I have read that they make your computer think its running wrong and it tries to compensate but there has to be ways people deal with that too.
The "Expensive problems" will arise if thats all you do. I think you have to address the whole spectrum of vehicle aspiration. From the filter to the exhaust to the computer. This will probably get expensive.

Thats pretty much what i had expected, im a mechanic too( mostly mercades, bmw's,ect.)i know the k&n sucks and throttle body spcers are junk. The programers have worked in the past for a few of my freinds for power reasons but they never did it for gas milage. I dont want to spend 400+ either. And I knew about the ACdelco plug thing, i wish someone would figure it out
