What are you considering 'better' mileage? With our stock 2005 GMC Sierra 1500 crew cab, we get 16 for average mileage, 12 when towing the camper trailer, and about 18-20 on the highway with cruise on and 70 mph.

If your 97 is lifted and has bigger tires, I'd estimate 10-13 would be a reasonable mileage guess. If you want better mileage than the 'teens, consider a smaller truck like a Toyota 2wd.
