A worn out broken CV can rattle around some too. Grab the shaft of the CVs and shake around.
Or put a giant mouse trap with Gnome food as bait.
I just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.

CV joint shouldn't make a rattling noise while driving on the road... ...unless, of course you are driving around in 4wd all the time The point is, it won't click unless it's turning and it won't turn unless it's in 4wd...

I blew one, and it made a lot of racket when in 2wd. But it was pretty consistent, didn't come and go too much. But it was worse in turns. It did sound like someone with a hammer was banging on the axle though.

The point is, it won't click unless it's turning and it won't turn unless it's in 4wd... 4WD can't engage unless the lever is in position, right? I keep the lever in 2Hi(Edit- originally said 4Hi- typo), but sometimes I'm suspicious of it staying in 4WD because the lights take forever to go out, usually(when transferring when stopped, in N) I have to put it in drive and roll forward a few inches before it will disengage. The center diff and rear diffs both take a long, long time to disengage too. Is this normal?

Does the Gen II have disconnecting hubs? On the wife's Rodeo, the front has drive flanges which make the CVs constantly engaged turning the front diff and axles all the time. The t-case is the single disconnect point. Do the later Monties work the same way? That is the only way I can think that the front CVs would be affected in 2wd. As far as driving around in 4 HI all the time, I don't understand why you'd do that. If you ARE driving that way, then there are a few things in the front driveline that could be making noise and the driveshafts are one of them. Once again, go get a look...

I'll go back and edit my post. I'll check out the CV joint, too.

On gen II's the CV's are always turning unless you fit aftermarket manual hubs. So if you had a bad CV this may cause a clicking sound. Driving around on pavement in 4hi is Fine it just like what most would call AWD (center diff unlocked). (just dont drive around pavement in High or low Lock) Anyways its perfectly normal for the flashing lights it takes a while to disengage. If you use the 4hi(active track) a lot maybe you wore out the CV. I would advise to drive in 2wd whenever on the hardball and I fitted manual hubs to reduce wear on the CV's and boots. Also driving in 4 hi will killyour gas milage but its great for wet or slippery conditions.

That's what I wanted to know. The system is similar to my wife's Rodeo, then. Our Rodeo doesn't have the diff lock, though. Anyway, I understand the desire for 4 hi in slick conditions, but can't driving in 4wd at high rates of speed/all times damage the system? At the least it HAS to be rough on the tires, right? I wouldn't run my trucks that way.
Back on topic, with the system working the way it does, I do agree that your CVs COULD be suspect. Gotta check it out, man...

I was saying a severly worn/broken CV can make noise when non turning. A perfect condition should not make any noise at all.
I just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.
