Anyway, I understand the desire for 4 hi in slick conditions, but can't driving in 4wd at high rates of speed/all times damage the system? At the least it HAS to be rough on the tires, right? I wouldn't run my trucks that way.

No the Gen II T-case was kind of an innovation at the time it was introduced as it was one of the first cases to give you four choices. 2wd, 4 hi, which is basicly like a subaru AWD, 4hiLC which is like a standard 4 hi with case diff locked and of course 4lo. with the gen 2 you can shift into 4hi at up to 60mph according to the owners manual.
