That's what I wanted to know. The system is similar to my wife's Rodeo, then. Our Rodeo doesn't have the diff lock, though. Anyway, I understand the desire for 4 hi in slick conditions, but can't driving in 4wd at high rates of speed/all times damage the system? At the least it HAS to be rough on the tires, right? I wouldn't run my trucks that way.

Back on topic, with the system working the way it does, I do agree that your CVs COULD be suspect. Gotta check it out, man...

No the Gen II T-case was kind of an innovation at the time it was introduced as it was one of the first cases to give you four choices. 2wd, 4 hi, which is basicly like a subaru AWD, 4hiLC which is like a standard 4 hi with case diff locked and of course 4lo. with the gen 2 you can shift into 4hi at up to 60mph according to the owners manual.

Need a Spot
it maybe the carrier(sp?) bearing gone bad. it's around your drive shaft and connected to a bracket. it sits more or less half way from the rear end and the trans. i had mine replaced once so far at my 110k mark.

if you need a pic of what it looks like let me know and i'll post one.

My parents took it to a shop today, and upon my suggestion, had the CV joints inspected as a potential cause of the noise. The shop said that it was, and that the half-shaft(s?) would need replacing. (Fuzzy on that detail- not sure if they recommended one or both)

Anyway, I ran across this thread tonight, and I think that could very well be my problem! The sound is from the passenger side only, and the fact that the shop said the axle needed replacing is a big indicator. Now that I've got this info(and pics from that thread), I want to go down to the mechanic that looked at it and see if that's what he saw inside.

Man, I wish I had a lift(or even some jackstands and a floor jack) so I could look at it myself.

Anyway, this is a cool new lead. If this is the problem, could making a spacer like Richard did in that thread fix my problem if the shaft isn't torn up too bad? That's what it looks like he did. I could fab that myself, too.

You mean I have to take the whole front diff off just to get to the halfshafts and CV joints?! No way!

(I apologize for sounding like a newbie, but, well okay I'm a newbie )

Im not sure if you have to completely remove the axle carrier, but it makes it easier to replace the clip and the possibly ruined outer seal.

I haven't read this whole thread, but if it sounds like there's a gnome with a hammer, I'd check to see if it is making regular beats, regardless of speed.

...Because that would be a metrognome
