I had to drop the gas tank in my YJ twice. Both times it was half full of gas. What a pita. So I fixed it. I cut an access hole in the floor above the gas tank. Used a sheet metal nibbler that I got from harbor freight. I also added an extension to the wiring harness so I could unplug the pump. ![[Linked Image]](http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a139/isitcrunchy/IMG_0033s.jpg)

Guys please don't take this post as an example to follow. Cutting a hole in the FIREWALL between your life and 20 gallons of gasoline is NOT a good idea!
So you had to pull the tank twice! What did you do wrong the first time? Now for the next TEN YEARS folks will have to ride around in a timebomb.. You made a very POOR CHOICE! Big JIm

This would be a good idea if you could make a plate that bolts and covers the hole back up. My 1995 Montero and alot of imports i've worked on have this standerd.

This would be a good idea if you could make a plate that bolts and covers the hole back up. My 1995 Montero and alot of imports i've worked on have this standerd. That would be a third dropping of the tank. But yeah, not a good idea without being able to cover it back up. Not to mention the integrity of the sheet metal next to what looks to be a seat belt mount is ruined.

The older gen 4Runners have an access plate under the rear passengers seat to access the tank unit; the newer ones don't. Some of that roof sealant stripping for tin roofs in addition to some hardware for a cover would be good once you dress out the edges of that hole.

Unfortunately B'ham is the 5th most dangerous city in the nation now . Cops dont even investigate thefts or non violent crimes, they are so involved with shootings and murder. Fortunately, there are people investing a ton of money in revitalizing some of the run down areas. I am catching my fair share of it fortunately, it looks like I have a years worth of work up in that area. I just keep my truck locked and my head down. And Jim, I have never understood the rabid nature of the Tide fans, another reason to keep yer head down . I wouldnt even consider putting another team's sticker or plate on my truck, dont want to get keyed or lose business!!

Hey maybe you can change yer handle to Smokey, not Crunchy no he will still be crunchy if it blows but seriously some sheetmetal and sealant will make it all good. Dad has a jeep with the fuel tank under the drivers seat, im sure many of you remember those. and some of you may even still drive one. now how safe is that? i hope that you guys go topless or at least soft top. fuel injected ejection seat
