A piece of sheet metal and some rubber sealant is all that will be required to fix what some people see as a bad thing. Those people probably do NOT work on their own junk. I think he has hit on a factory flaw that was overdue for correction. Leave him alone and go flame someone your own size.

Well if I was building Wranglers and I had the choice of presenting a vehicle with a nice smooth back floor and one with an UGLY floor... I'd opt for zackly what they did. After all how often does the tank have to be dropped anyway? I betcha the guy wouldn't have cut the floor if he had done it correctly the first time. PATCHING it with anything cept the floor out of another wrangler is going to be a HUGE UGLY!! BTW I ain't picking on ANYONE We need to preach caution here. And what he did is not a cautious way to do things.. If a guy does this and his wife and children wind up as chrispy critters he will suffer greatly!! So stuff it dude. I don't know about all, but I would say that the majority of people on this site DO work on their own "junk"...there is a reason for posting in the tech section.
Nobody is getting flamed about the job...we are just expressing our opinions about what someone else did to their vehicle...something that many of us would never do OR suggest doing.

bj i do hafta defend him a bit. sometimes you do get faulty parts, or parts that fail prematurely. you should know this by now. personally i dont think it is a bad idea. by looking at the pic there is a cross bar there that the seatbelts are bolted to that is not cut so the structure isn't copletley gone. all he needs to do is use hammerite or por-15 around where he cut for rust prevention then some sheetmetal and sealer to prevent fires in the passenger area. no big deal. as many stated many foreign car campanies have acess holes, many under the back seat.
out of all the jeeps in this town the d**n gremlin had to invade mine
I've done so much, with so little for so long i can practicly do anything with nothing

Perhaps they do. However the acess holes in those vehicles are NOT on an uneven floor in the middle of a storage space. The covers are fitted and properly sealed. NOT on the assend of the vehicle where a rearend colision might force gasoline into the vehicle.. These covers are out of site and not in plane view where all the UGLY will be seen. I can sympathize. I heard my pump wheezing and panicked. My YJ is my daily driver and (at the time) only streetable vehicle. So I picked up a new pump and went home to replace it. With no assistant, I unbolted the pump, dropped it onto my chest, then slid out from under it. After getting everything disconnected, I discovered that I have some sort of oddball tank and pump that doesn't match ANY pumps that any of the parts stores carry.
Since the Jeep is my only driver, that tank went in and out 3 times before I gave up on replacing it. That was a year ago now and I haven't heard it making any noise since then. Someday soon I'm gonna have to deal with it, and I'm gonna wish I had that access plate. I'm also gonna need to figure out where to get that replacement pump...
[edit] Oh yeah, I also changed the fuel filter at that time, first time since I had it, so I'm sure that helped!

The ones I have purchased were at NAPA parts houses. They were sort of genetic and did not look like the ones I took out, but folowing the directions worked for the install and the pumps have worked fine. Big Jim

I started at Checker (I know, I know); the NAPA that I went to didn't have anything listed and the Jeep dealer wanted something like $370 for it. It's good to know that "generics" will work fine once this one goes out! For now I'll try not to run my tank too low and keep this one alive as long as possible!

Ha! I just remembered I had one in my shop. I purchased it for a 4 banger and didn't use it. Ok so here is what is written on the box:
NAPA Tru-Flow fuel pump 2P74032 Universal Replacemant fuel pump
The box contains the pump, filter screen and all needed fittings to adapt it to the existing plumbing in the Jeep tank. Big JIm
