Be careful with "second hand" information. It may not be accurate.

We have first hand info in this forum that clearly shows that the SOHC and DOHC engine are non-interference. Search and you'll find several individuals who have broken a timing belt and did not sustain any damage.

But the above applies to US/Canadian Sportages. It is POSSIBLE that in other countries the engine MIGHT be interference if it has a higher compression ratio. US/Canadian Sportages are 9.2:1. If other countries run higher chances are a busted timing belt will result in valves and pistons hitting each other.

I have discovered that Kia Techs easily confuse the Sephia and the Sportage. The Sephia engine IS an interference engine and will be destroyed if the timing belt breaks.

But given this it is still wise the replace the timing belt when it is due. Rather safe than sorry.

@ Axeman . Also Europe engines have 9.2 compression

The thing is that he claims he have seen 2 engines with bent valves due ( an ONLY ) to timing belt..

135,000 !! DANG you aint wastin time putting a new belt on. id say you got your moneys worth out of that one. i was thinking maybe milling the head some day for a little more compression.at the expense of having to run premium, and probably would be an "interferance engine" then. i dont know, i just want more power. i was wondering if an electric water pump might help, elec. fan did...like i said i dont know. im about to put a leafblower under the hood! like a poor mans turbo, throw in a little nos.

I have a $1500 bill from Kia stating otherwise, I live in Canada and have a 'NON-inteferance' engine, yet the valves still made contact with the piston, and the timming belt hadn't even broken!

Iron, did you get the valves or see the head with the bent valves? I bought a motor that had a broken cam gear and I replaced the belt and gear and it started right off.
What made you take it in initially? Was it rattling? Just can't understand how it could happen. I know that I turned the motor over without the belt on, then put the cams in their correct position, then installed the belt, and nothing hit.
I'm confused. Is it SOHC or DOHC? Never Mind....its DOHC due to your year.

My initial thought was confusion. He has a non -interferance engine as we all do. Prolly a Crankshaft issue or something in the likes....and that would cause a Big problem with the parts altogether....or quite possibly something worse was going on. Really wonder????

Give us more info IRON.

Took her in because of a tapping sound from the engine. After a month of not being able to solve the problem, the dealer pulled the head. An intake valve was sticking open and making contact with the top of the piston, which promptly closed the valve!

No broken timming belt, No broken valves, No damaged piston. But the valves did make contact with the top of the pistion! Since the Sporty was a month out of warrenty and I know the service manager, Hell I shoot him on a reagular basis on the paintball field, why would he lie? I paid for 1/2 the cost of the parts and NO labour, Also had the timming belt changed at the same time and the head tested for cracks, had all the valve seats honed, A new set of lifters and hydralic adjusters, basically I had the top end rebuilt!

In theory the engine is a Non-interferance engine.
