Neither--springs. You will thank yourself in the long run.

I describe some of the pros and cons of those lift options on the web page below:

And yes, a good set of springs is the best option, performance-wise, but also the most money.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Gents,

I am a little confused with the replies so far.

Are the new springs you are recommending a coil over conversion (eliminating the leaf springs), a coil addition to the stock leaf springs, or a custom set of leaf springs?

Thanks,

Mike

Same here, 2-3 inches via springs.
Find somebody that has upgraded a TJ (everywhere!) and buy them a beer in exchange for their old springs.

This is what is being recommended:

I agree that new leaf springs are your best bet. I would suggest Old Man Emu springs, they ride great and bolt in place of the stockers.

To actually answer your original question though, I would say everything in moderation. I would use a slightly longer shackle (maybe 2" longer in total length), full length add-a-leaf, and a small block (no larger than 2") in that order.

This is a pic of the right side coil on my daily driver 86 4Runner

I put these on last year, front coils from a 91 fj80 with 4" cut from the top and installed with a external spring compressor.

Once we loaded her down with 5000lbs of limestone and drove 2 miles nice and easy all the way home.

So far so good.
Thanks ZUK for the IDEA!
