Getting the Wheeling Fever
My 86 22RE 4Runner does'nt want to start in the morning or afternoon after it has been sitting for 4 or 5 hours. When it does start (after several minutes(3 or 4) of turning the starter on and off) it acts like it is skipping until I give it a little throttle. After it starts and I drive out of the parking space, it seems to run fine. But the next day I have the same problem. I don't want to wear out the starter, so I need a list of things to start looking at.

Body Damage is Cool
Is the starter actally cranking the engine or does it just "click"?

This will help narrow it down.

If the starter is turning the engine over but it is not starting, try the fuel pump test jumper:
http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/index.shtml#FuelPump

Forces the fuel pump on.

I placed a jumper in the test connector when it first began to give me a problem. The fuel filter has also been replaced. I seem to be getting fuel to the engine. Once the engine runs it will start with no problem. But after 3 or 4 hours same problem.

You need fuel, air and spark to run the engine. See if you can determine which one(s) is missing when you have the starting problem. Could be one of the cold start components (CS injector, the CSI time switch, ECU temp sender) for example, not kicking in the cold start system.

When I checked the resistance on the CSI time switch I got none. Does anyone know where I can get a used one? The local parts stores sell new for around $140-160. I plan to sell this 4Runner and the more I spend the less I get in return.

Is there no way to bypass the CSI time switch to make sure the CS injector is also working?

Yes...
For years (due to a bad ecu) I HAD the CSI wire directly to the battery through a toggle switch on the dash. I would hit the switch for a second or two till it cranked and started. This is somewhat how the FSM shows how to test the the injector to apply 12 volts to one side and ground the other.

I will give it a try in the next few days. How did you determine that you had a bad ECU? I'm not getting a check engine light and I know the light works (kept lighting up until I replaced my O2 sensor). Also can the cold start injector be rebuilt/repaired? I remember reading about a place called RC engineering(I think) that rebuild injectors.
