Ok, well then, my mind is made up. Tomorrow, off come the Knuckles.

Roger, thanks for mentioning that, I'll take a close look at the bearings, I won't replace the tops if they dont' look worn.

A brass drift it is!

You guys rule!

here is sort of a write up I did with pictures showing the quick way to tear down a front end. it may help you out some.

I tried to do it that way once on the trail (it is called the "Camo method, he use to change Birfields out in ten minutes). It sucked for me, to heavy and with the arthritis; I have in my hands and elbows it did not work. I do not have to bleed my brakes when I take the calipers because of the way I have it set up. See picture below.

Well, I'm slow (my job gets in the way) but I did get one knuckle off and have it pretty well cleaned, I'm going to try to get the bearings changed in it today.
I still need to go find a brass drift tho, tried two diff auto stores yesterday, neither had them for sale.

I have another questions -some signs of damage on one end of the axle, on the bottom of the cup (inside bottom), it looks like the birf or knuckle was rubbing, like the bearing had failed. Shoot, I'll go get a picture and post it - I need coffee first tho, so it'll be an hour or two. I'm just wondering what failed to cause that kind of mark.

Thanks to all you guys ~ I'm not strong either - baby steps.
EDIT: Doh, I see the same mark on other people pics. Must be from the factory.

Here's a pic - notice the damage that's highlighted. What causes that? What effect will that have on my new bearings and such?

What kind of grease do you guys like to use to put this stuff back together? And do you use the same type of grease in the birfs\knuckle as in the wheel bearing?
I see in the manual it says to use high temp wheel bearing grease when replacing the wheel bearings (which I'm going to do today).
I haven't gotten the high temp grease yet and I was going to put just normal grease in the birfs\knuckle.
I'd like some waterproof grease, maybe I should check at a marine shop?
Any suggestions from you guys?

Body Damage is Cool
I just bought a bigass cup of the red tacky wheel bearing grease from advanced for like 10 bucks and used that through out.

I looked on my shelf I have some tubes of Green grease, so I'll use that but I'll also buy a tub of some high-temp grease, whatever I can find I guess.

Say, do you guys ever replace the rotors at all?

Rotors are pretty much a PITA without a press. The lug studs are pressed in. You can probably beat them out with a BFH, but will probably need new studs which will need to be pressed in. Real quick with a press though!

Thanks, though I didn't find a thinkness spec on the rotor's, I'm giving them a good wire brushing with the angle grinder before going into the parts washer. I dont have a press, so I'll leave them as is, they don't look horrible. I'll put the new races and bearings in and maybe get to start reassemble today. Maybe not, I'm not going to work on it all day if I can help it.
Have to go find some grease now.... a big, big bucket.
