I've got 33's on all fours but my spare is a 31.
I will eventually upgrade it but for now what are the issues... a.) When off-roading? b.) When driving home?
I'm heading on the Big Bear trip this weekend (from the Mitsubishi forum) and I'm wondering what the drive home will be like if I do have to change that tire (knock on wood, not trying to jinx myself here).
If you know of a previous thread please send me a link as I didn't have much luck with the search.
THANK YOU.

You'd have to put the mismatched tires on the front and free wheel them so they have no affect on the diff. The problem is that the two sides will rotate at different speeds and wreak havoc on the diff/axles. You'd not be able to run them on the rear like that, so you'll have to swap 33 to back and spare to front if flat is on the rear.
That being said, steering will not be fun on the way home if you had to go very far. Offroader has a good spare 33 that I was going to buy, but now cannot. Talk to him as it was a great deal!
All of this info is as I understand it (I'm in the same situation, btw) and someone else will chime in if I'm on crack.

You're not on crack; the science is in the circumference. Yep, make sure the rear end has the same sizes if you have to go there.
Yeah, the drive home would suck; it would be like giving a plane constant rudder in winds to keep it straight. In the dirt/mud, it'll be more forgiving. KEEP YOUR SPEED DOWN.
I've got 31x10.50's to put under Blackie, but the spare is a 31x9.50, as it's still mounted underneath.
Hope ya checked the air in that thing and have all your jack tools; the '99 4R I bought last summer was missing a piece; had to go visit the dealer.

Thanks a lot guys! Appreciate it. I'll see how it goes, check my tire pressure, remember all my jack tools, cross my fingers, and save up my money for the $x$.

Make sure the tire can come down too. I clean and lube mine once a year.

Make sure the tire can come down too. I clean and lube mine once a year. Boy that thing took quite a while to come down, so long that it now sits in the back of the rig! Eventually it will sit on my roof rack, figure the only harm is the decreased mpg right? And perhaps a couple spots at Hollister I'll no longer be able to squeeze through... hmmm... [color:"red"]UPDATE -- I gave in today and purchased a full 33" size spare to match my other 4. [color:"green"]$ $ So I guess it will no longer sit underneath even if I lube it... but I really don't want it under there anyway... NEW QUESTION -- The rim of my spare is a 10.5" while my other 4 rims are 12.5". Thus I have a 33x12.5x15 sitting on a 10.5 rim. Not a perfect plan, but better than the previous situation with the 31" right? I hope... 1 step forward, 2 steps back.

Well as far as mods go, at least make sure you can secure your tire, for safety AND theft. Also wrap that chain/cable up, so it doesn't beat your e-brake cable to death back there, if you're not removing the assembly straightaway. (14mm IIRC)
You'll be fine w/that new spare. Go have FUN!
Edit: I noted the rack on the top of my 99 4R is rated for 165#, evenly distributed, so that's something to think about.

Reminds me of the two times I had to use an improperly sized spare tire. First time I was running the 215's that came on the truck and had to use my 225 spare. 2nd time was when I had 235's and had to run the 225. Both times weren't that bad...but then again not the same as going from 33x12.5 to 31x10.5 . Right now I am lucky all 5 LS Rims have 31x10.5's on them (the red truck), and 5 Steelies have 235's on them (Silver truck).
Best of luck on the trip. Hope you don't end up like ChrisJ did, tore out the sidewall on his brand new Dunlop 32x11.5 and had to put the spare 32x11.5 BFG on in the rain...and MUD. I only helped him get the torn dunlop on the rear gate, and damn it was heavy. Can only wonder how much fun 33x12.5's would be to juggle around, lol. Again enjoy your trip.

Replace your back bumper with one of these. web page I think its better to have the thing hanging off the back then adding wieght to the top of your vehicle. If you dont want to pay for a custom rear bumper there is probably a way to just mount the carrier to your frame.
