For now, I'll reveal that it was great that Joanna had a 33" spare...

...Her post will be coming soon, I'm sure.

[color:"red"]UPDATE -- I gave in today and purchased a full 33" size spare to match my other 4. [color:"green"]$ <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif" alt="" /> $

So...
I did indeed blow out my front right tire on last weekend's trip!
Only about 1/2 mile up the trail!
<img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />

I've never heard such a loud exhalation of air or felt such a sudden drop of the vehicle. Twas a large hole in the sidewall, uhg. But I had that full size spare to make use of, and it got me all the way through the trails and all the way home with no problem. Few!

Will post a pic soon.

Thanks for all your input you guys.

NEW QUESTION -- The rim of my spare is a 10.5" while my other 4 rims are 12.5". Thus I have a 33x12.5x15 sitting on a 10.5 rim.

Wha?

I'd be more concerned that a 33x12.5" tire on a 12" rim is a terrible combination than the other tire on a 10" rim...

I think 33x12'5's are perfect on an 8" rim personally.... you can air 'em down to 10 PSI without burping on rocks and sand...... 6 psi on bottomless snow if you want.

I think that was a typo. I changed that tire on the rocks and know it wasn't 12.5" wide. Likely a 10" wide wheel. I don't think it was an 8.

Uhhhhhhh, OK let me look into that one. Obviously this area is new to me... and I better learn quick as next on the shopping list is a steel rim for the spare tire. I'll be back in touch... For now please ignore that previous comment!

Sorry to be a PIT<img src="/forums/images/graemlins/butwiggle.gif" alt="" />.

Hey Jon, can you please PM me the link for the rim when you get a chance in between moving between countries? I looked but couldn't quite pin it down. Thanx.

Never a pain, Joanna.

Here are the ones you want if you have 8" wide wheels with 4" backspacing. You need to measure the width of the wheel at the rim for width. You then need to put a straight edge across the BACK of the wheel and measure from the mounting surface to the straightedge for the backspacing. Report these numbers and I'll find the matching wheel and post a link. I'll try and get a couple of different options for you, too.

EDIT: Here is the "Rock Crawler" equivalent from 4wheelparts. A little more expensive and .25" less backspacing. Again, post up the measurements and I'll help you get what you need. The Yota wheel works just fine for now, though. Also, what was the outcome with the replacement tire?

Jon, ur so helpful, much appreciated. I'll get the measurements tomorrow. As for the replacement tire, I'll find out for sure from the service center on my way down to Pismo this weekend (it's located in SLO). So far over the phone they tell me it's in stock and it'll be covered by the additional warranty purchased by the truck's previous owner. I'll cross my fingers.

Meanwhile, here's a few pics:

I can just hear the comments now... but am still incredibly thankful I picked up the full size spare! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/drunk.gif" alt="" />

That pic was before we had to get her the rest of the way up the ledge so we could change the tire. Anyway, with a little massaging the wheel WILL survive. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

Joanna,

I don't think that rock was excessively sharp. We all went over it. Perhaps you hit it at just the right angle and perhaps the tire had just a tad bit too low air pressure which might have allowed it to fold in enough to that the rock hit the rim behind a folded sidewall?

Anyhow, you did great on the trail! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
