93 cherokee. Had problems with it sputtering when it's cold and hot, at low and high speeds and when cornering and on straight-aways. It died on me a couple times while I was driving , but managed to restart. This last time however it wouldn't. When turning ignition on, I don't here the fuel pump prime. I took hose off at filter and no gas is pumped. Engine turns over fine, there is just no fuel getting to the engine. Ideas? As well, how do you pull a pump out. Is it necessary to drop the tank? Thanks to all who may reply.

Body Damage is Cool
The majority of older vehicles require dropping the tank to access the fuel pump. Not too many, that I know of at least, have an access hole to get to the pump without dropping the tank.

Gun it and run it!

The Cherokee fuel pump is located near the center-front of the tank on top. I know the 89 version fuel pump can be removed without dropping the tank.

Replacement pumps are expensive. Check for loose or broken connections.

Also check that the pump has a good ground. Yes, as has been mentioned you can access the pump w/o lowering the tank. Much easier to do on a lift or if you have a lift on your XJ. One other thing to check is the fail-safe switch. I do NOT know exactly where yours is located but it may be going bad. Is was intended by the factory to cut power to the fuel pump in the event of a rollover and when(rarely) they go out they exibit the same symptoms as you described. Find a FSM and look up where yours is located.
