#1 Reason that I will never own an Automatic. that and IMHO its boring to drive with only gas and brake. But I know some people who are the opposite and will only drive automatic....I would say go with a 5-speed but I know they aren't too easy to find. And correct me if I'm wront but the 5-speeds are only in the lower end models like XR and XP a.k.a Mine and Phils. hahaha

So let me get this straight to be sure...

The auto's come in three different diff ratios
4.62/4.88/5.65 's and they all have the same tires on them.

Then does that mean the auto trans gearing is different in all three of them ?

If not, then wouldn't going from 31's stock to 33's on the 5.65's with the auto trans work better on the hwy ?

I'm just trying to figure out how I see on other boards a hundred different guys 99% with auto's running 31's up to 35's with all three gear rations tossed into the mix.

Anyone have a clear answer to that or am I just missing something simple ?

Nope Nigel, mine is an XRII, which is the highest specced SWB - digital HVAC, power everything, the whole works. SWB and LWB seem to be optioned out differently. SWB didn't get leather, but seemed to get everything else. Bit its still a stick...

Phil, yours sure is nice for a SWB. smile From what I researched, the Exceed models were only available with the the slushbox. Just an FYI.
As much as a 5spd would have been a fun choice, I had to go auto myself due to the highway RPM issues, and the fact that I end up in 5km/h traffic crawls on occasion....
Will the proper idle speed give the truck a little forward movement in D? I turned the idle up on my New Yorker ever so slightly so that slow-crawl-but-mostly-moving traffic is just a matter of brake...off, brake...off, keeping the gas pedal and engine RPMS out of it.

My LWB auto will crawl to a point. If there is too much incline it will stop.

Remember guys, automatics have a torque converter and this can "make up" for different gearing and tires (to a point). Manuals have a direct mechanical connection and will crawl 'till they stall.

My buddy has a BJ-70 diesel Landcruiser manual on boggers and as a demo, he put it in 4-low and drove it up against the flat side of a concrete ramp. It just dug itself down to the axles, those tires just kept turning! Sold me on diesels right there, heh heh.

Oh, and this is the first Automatic vehicle I've ever owned. Went auto because I'm hoping the wife will drive it eventually.

I have to admit that my time driving a manual RHD in the UK was some of the most fun driving I've ever done. That could have been the one-lane farmroads in the rented 3-banger Festiva though.. or maybe it was doing 150km/h with the traffic flow going into Scotland.. nope. It was the James Bond factor of shifting with the left hand.

Well I have no idea what trim package I have haha. it just said XR when I bought it on the spec sheet. Im sure putting larger tires on an auto will be livable...It probably won't drive exactly how you would like it to though.

I just test drove one of the Pajero's at VIB.

Nice guys and nice Pajero.

92/LWB/winter pack/LSD/leather/beige&green/31" tires/5.29's.

Took it up to 100km/hr. It was just a hair over 2,900 RPM.

Sound about right ?

Mirror image of the one I may import.

I loved it. I think I'm going to go for it and import the one I posted here.

It's an auto and leather ... my both biggest pet peeve's but the woman likes it and hopefully she'll drive it to down the road. I mean it IS comfy.

VIB is asking 11,500 for theirs.

I can get this one in for half that.

I think the decision if fairly obvious.

I mean heck.. I can ask for a hundred opinions but really I won't know until I buy it and try it out with different things.

Very smooth though.

yea that is geared a little bit better than mine..I am at 2900RPM at about 90km/h. you should convince them to put some 33" tires on it and then take it for another drive and see how the transmission shifting is haha. I doubt they will go for it though.
