Need a Spot
Where can I get a Front Hub Lock Nut Wrench to remove the hubs from my '87 Montero. I need to replace wheel bearings.

Service Manual says: Special Tool No. MB990954

Local Napa & Shucks guys can't identify it. Can anybody tell me what I need to ask for? I've never seen one so I can't describe it to them.

Try a search for it - some have used a 3/4 ton Ford or GM (don't remember which) 6 tooth hub socket... you have to grind off 4 of the teeth. The specific application tool is about $70 and not worth the price if you can find the alternative. If you can't find the alternative, I'll mail you mine to use for postage.... but for the price of postage, you can probably buy the alternative tonight from PepBoys or AutoZone, grind 4 teeth off and fix the truck tomorrow.

If you really have to do it now, cant wait, it can be done with a hammer and punch.

I just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.

I bought a really big pair of curver needle nose plyers that have a long handle. They spread wide enough to fit the holes. Works great.

IIRC, mine is a 3/4 ton GM socket. Ground off 4 of the teeth. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" /> It's a little cumbersome to use (tends to slip off) but it gets the job done.

I bought the GM one for something like $16 and just grinded all but 2 of the pegs off.

Thanks Guys,

I can handle grinding off 4 of the 6 lugs. KD Tools lists one with and O.D. of 2.60". Is that about right?

(Frank, thanks for offering to mail yours but it looks like I'm getting it worked out here pretty fast.)

For torquing down the hub nut, Torque it 94-145 ft.lbs., then back it off to 0 ft.lbs., then retorque it to 18 ft.lbs., then back it off 30-40 degrees.

Ahh...so that's why they call you captain crunch
