i know that toyota made some one ton trucks and i was wondering what the rte is. im figuring its probably a 1/4 ton, but i wasnt for sure since it does have a bigger rear axle? i am talking about the 4wd models. and i know the rating is based on spring capacity also. but since i have not found any other info on this i thought i would ask. thanks

The GVWR should be listed on the sticker in the driver's side door jamb. My '85 4Runner shows 4800 lbs.:

I think the pickups are rated at 1/2 ton.

did you know the RTE is a turbo? At least I think that is what you are talking about.

The frame isself is the same one they use in the 1ton trucks, but the springs are only 1/2 ton rated.
Since you already have the 8" rear end, just swapping out the springs for the 1ton rated kind will make your truck capable of hauling that amount.
Bit of caution though, they are stiff.

Just a side note, there's a 1ton cab/chassis truck (2wd dually) that's been outfitted as a tow truck in Michigan City, IN.
Fun to see!
I'll see if I can grab a pic at some point.

Hmm, I sold my '83 pickup to my roommate who occasionally gets a load of gravel for the driveway. He loads it up to about 1200 lbs and it doesn't squat to badly and drives OK. So, 1\2 ton is about right, based on what we see here.

Just to help with the confusion that Toyota created.

The 1-ton is 2wd only. There was never a 4wd 1-ton made.

Dualies were not standard on the 1-ton. They were an option available to any truck.

The above words are pre-Tacoma and T100 era.
