I think the piece you're missing is that the automatic Jerry is identifying is a *version* of the AW3080LE.

While the transmissions can be the same, the bellhousings can still be different. It is very likely true that this transmission is used in many Isuzu vehicles (as well as other makes) - with different bellhousings for each engine application.

As an example, the transmission attached to my diesel is the same as the one attached to the 88-91 4-cylinder gas engines - except for the front half of the case. Internally it is the same (to be fair, gear ratios may differ, but it is the same model).

A more extreme example is the Mercedes-Benz automatic used in many of the gas and diesel cars from the 70s to (likely) the early 90s. It is the basically same unit (internally) that Porsche uses as a rear-mounted transaxle in the 928. Definitely would not be able to swap it between the two, though.
