From your description, you must have the manual transmission.. On the auto, the plug is on the side and reachable, although still a bit difficult..

From what other folks have said, on the manual you can pull the console plastic off and get to the plug from the top side.. If anyone would take photographs and document the procedure a bit, I will update the following article to cover the manual transmission...
