I kind of took it as a sign a few years back when I found out that none of the cars that Jasper has ever sponsored actually run a Jasper engine.

I have no less than a dozen timing chain tensioners that show where the top oil pump bolt jammed the tensioner pad, or the poor thing was smashed. (After all, no one wants it to fall off, right?) I have dug enough silicone out of engines to seal up a bulldozer, and had people look at me blank when I asked what the timing setting was or for a torque or clearence spec.

I have to confess, you have me so paranoid about over-tightening those bolts, that I sort of cheated when I put the new head on last summer. I just pulled the old, semi-worn pad and arm out of the old tensioner body without unbolting it, and slid the new pad and arm in the old body (along with the factory spring, since it looked a little more robust). About 7000 trouble-free miles so far, so I guess I couldn't have screwed up too badly

The last line tells the truth of your story, you would and should be more upset with the lack of responses, or excuses to a response than the initial problem.

That was the main thing I was pissed about, although it's funny how once the VP gets involved they can magically do something about a problem without any argument . The other major thing was the way their technicians treated myself and the 2 shop managers that dealt with them on my behalf. I can see how they could assume I'm an idiot, but they talked down to seasoned mechanics the same way they did to me.

I went into it with a 'crap happens' attitude and was willing to work with them until they treated me like something they stepped in... Thank goodness for VP listings on Yahoo Finance

EB, you REALLY need to start rebuilding Mitsu engines. Start with the 3.0, 12 valve, okay?

>>>*....*Uhhh. I know those like the back or my hand and have bored/fitted/etc a couple hundred.

Yep! The 12 V 3.0, the 3000GT, the 16V 4G63 is my fun one one, I taught my son Tod how to port one using common sense and some test results.

Got guides too, but the price went UP 50%. I hate that but they really don't let me set the prices....*EB

Been a few years since I updated this, figured it was about time...

I just turned 28k on the replacement motor and am once again having problems unfortunately. It's had timing chain rattle for quite a while which I was planning on remedying with an EB metal backed setup and has recently started emptying the overflow tank every few days.

Last night I think I pretty much narrowed it down to either a leaking headgasket or cracked head as it dies when the oil cap is removed but not when it and the radiator cap are both removed. I'm also getting waves of bubbles in the radiator every few seconds with the cap off while it's running. Hasn't overheated and temp is riding in the normal range, no white smoke out of the tailpipe either.

I've given up on Jasper and my warranty on this motor is up anyways so the 2 options I'm considering now are repairing it or swapping the 5.3L LSx motor I have sitting in my garage. If I went the repair route I'd probably go ahead and get some HP goodies since I'll already have everything apart: StreetRV head from EB (wouldn't be much more than having the current head disassembled, magnafluxed, and reassembled and I'd get a new casting with less risk of issues), 261c cam, timing set, and one of his head gasket sets, adds up to ~$700.

On the flip side I've got everything for the 5.3 swap (was planning on putting it in my Volvo wagon) aside from the Toyota mounts, exhaust, and a 4wd setup/driveline (have a 2wd 4l60e right now). If I went 2wd for now the cost wouldn't be too much more than the head replacement and I could take my time deciding on whether to get a 4wd GM trans or run an OTT divorced case setup with the Toyota case. The only wrench in this plan is that it would take a while and I wouldn't have anything to tow my boat with until it was done aside from begging/borrowing trucks from friends, would be much more awesome than a 130hp 22re though

I've heard stories about Jasper where they repair/replace once cylinder and leave the rest alone if there is a problem with just one cylinder. True?

Not sure about that but I'm definitely not impressed with their quality or customer service...

Yes. I opened a few up at a shop I worked at. In them we found mismatched bearings, varied scoring and crosshatches in the cylinders. My suggestion is to use a reputable independent small builder or do it yourself...

Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...
