The guy eventually ordered one from Japan and they installed it for him - total cost: $4000.00

Thats got to be some bullcrap.

Maybe you have to order the rubber ring that fits North America Spec Vehicles? There's no way they woudl build them differently.

This is all very interesting and I certainly hope that there is a happy ending. I had cancelled a bid on a mint Delica last year when I realized that finding a windshield would be trouble - I assumed that the Pajero would take a Montero glass.

OK, a little more digging (and some phone calls into the States) confirms that the 1992 Mits Montero uses a SAGS#FW711. That is the windshield that Apple brought in for me and the one that didn't fit. William says he will get me a price in a few days - the guys in Japan are working on it. There is ony one other chance - that Apple's supplier had the wrong windshield labelled as a FW711.

Japan Abbotsford Auto quote me approx. $500 on the phone. Not certain if it's OEM or aftermarket. Order now, receive it mid-July.

Do you know the difference between the OEM one and aftermarket one's with tint ? DOT/ASx ?

Thanks.

Good topic.
Jesse

...and they use PPG glass which is the only glass I'll ever buy.

From my own personal experience, ppg does not make the correct curve on Gen I Montero driver side window glass. The cut was the same, but the cure was completely different from the OE glass. Also the dealership purchased OE glass was cheaper than the ppg glass. This was all done with SafeLite Autoglass a large US firm.

Which makes me wonder if ppg has similar problems with their Gen II windsheild glass as well.

I have never heard of a problem with PPG glass...I'm not saying it will never happen though.

I just stumbled accross a handy little piece of information....I'm sorry I lost the link already but I read that Euro and Japanese vehicle windshields are designed to "pop out" during a collision, this could be a big part of why the 2 are different.

It still doesn't make sense to me, because the Montero is the same truck that is built in japan, you'd think they would just throw the same windshields in them all. I have seen crazier stuff happen though.
