 What could this leak be?

Need a Spot

Hiya Guys, Its me again. The PITA. After doing the head gaskets, and not having one bit of trouble at all, and I do mean at all, I see a water spot under the truck as it cools down. I've used it all over town, on the highway, not one bit of a problem. Now, after all is said and done, I parked the truck in my driveway, and noticed a water spot under the damn thing. It seems to be coming from the rear, and the spot is under the drivers side floorboard. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it don't. I'm totally baffled. Any Ideas anyone? I'm going to put it up on the lift tomorrow, let it get to operating temp, run it a bit longer, and see if I can see where its comeing from. But again, this is all after a few days of using it. Remember, its a 92 with the 3.0L engine. Just for some insurance, I'm going to replace all the wire clamps with regular hose clamps. I would really appreciate any help. My guess is Bad hoses to heater core or an improperly seated O ring in rear of water pump.
There's a UV dye you can buy along with a UV light for ~$20 at most parts stores that allows you to see where the leak is coming from.

I agree with Ray -- heater hoses (most likely) or o-ring (less likely, but possible). Run the engine up to temp with the heater on and feel the underside of the connections at the firewall. A second, perhaps foolish question is: are you sure it is coolant? From the location it might possibly be the clutch slave cylinder starting to leak... uhm, that's assuming we're talking the 3.0L V6, right? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cyclops.gif" alt="" /> Eric W.

Check the drain fitting at the bottom of the radiator. It has a replaceable o-ring - or you can replace the plug for a few bucks. Check it really well, because it's hard to detect a slow/intermittent leak there. Coolant from the plug can drip onto the frame and migrate to another drip location before dropping to the ground.

My 2 cents is with Frank. The skid plates on a 92 extend well back to firewall.
