Looking for a double cab to replace my T100. I like the idea of a 4-cyl for town driving. My T100's 3.4 V6 has always been a slouch anyway.

Yep you could, i thing they were only available as "prerunners" though, no 4wd...
if you think a 3.4 is a slouch you want something smaller ?

What I meant was that I'm used to the performance, and I don't seem to need it for around town. That said, I have never driven a 4 cyl Tacoma. So, we'll see. The 3.4 V are all I've seen around for sale. The 4 cyl. Double Cabs must be rare.

I just checked manheim.com.

The 4 cyl. 2WD Tacoma Crew Cab didn't come out until 2001. That year, there were three trim levels available, Prerunner, Prerunner SR5, and the TRD O/R.

2002, 03, and 04 saw just the Crewcab Prerunner and Prerunner TRD O/R.

Hey DFW metroplexer.

I too made the switch from T100 to my current ride: 02 Tacoma D-cab TRD Prerunner. Was going to get the 4x4, but price would have been an extra $2k. I justify the 4x2 since this would save $2k, and I rarely used my 4x4 in the past, plus the fact this is an TRD with the E-locker rear, which with proper tires, it should perform similar to a stock 4x4 anyway.

Also thought about the 4cy, auto (made 2001-2004), but they are rare. All the used ones I've found were Prerunner. From what I recall, these 4cy were never really advertised. When purchased new, the price was actually an adjustment of credit from the original MSPR as the original MSRP was based on the V6 model.

As far as performance, I think you'll appreciate the 3.4 in the Tacoma as it is a lighter, smaller vehicle, especially the Prerunner. Having had 3 T100s in the past with the 3.4, I can tell you that the 3.4 in the Taco is much faster, and MPG has been better as well. Thus far, I'm getting a good 2-3 mpg better than any of my past T100s.

If you go to the local DFW craigslist, there was a guy selling his 4cy D-cab prerunner for only $9.5k. The catch is, it has high miles. Do the search and you'll see his truck as he's listed several times.

I always thought the T100 only offered a 3.0L. Am I mistaken? To my knowledge, the 3.4L didn't come around until after the T100 was discontinued. If that's the case, it would explain the increase in perceived power....

T100 was produced from '93-'98. In '93 and '94, only the 3.0 v6 was offered along with the 4cy. Then in '95, T100 offered its first extended cab, along with the new 3.4 V6, replacing the 3.0 V6.

Actually the T-100 was 3.0 exclusively until 95.5 when they started putting in the 3.4 and the 2.7. You could only get the 2.7 in the standard cab longbed.

Well, now that i've driven 3 or 4 V6 D-cabs, I must say that the acceleration is not what i would expect from a 3.6L. It must be the gearing or something. My wife's Sienna minivan and our Tribute have more punch when i floor it.

I'm still gonna try a Frontier crew cab. Not that I need it, but they even have a supercharged model just for fun.
