Need a Spot
Hi everybody. Need a lil help here. Ive got an '89 22re with a new alternator and a new battery and I still cant get the battery to charge. Had the alternator checked before i left the store Tuesday and it tested ok. Battery and alt were bought on Tues so it shouldnt have anything to do with that I am assuming. Anybody have any tips as to what this may be???? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Check all of the fuse links under the hood. Also, try to follow the wires coming off of the alt.

Been working on that. Getting the same reading on my meter from the batery, terminal to terminal, as I get from the alt with the truck off. Got it jumped and running now and the wire that goes from the alt to the box on the driver side fender is hot as hell from the battery side of the box to the battery. Guessing that means a link somewhere is out or is that common when its charging?

Bad alternators can pass on the test fixtures. Btdt, more than once. Check with a meter on the vehicle to see if it is indeed truly puting out a charge.

Well I checked the volts at the stud on the alt and Im getting 14.4 which seems about right at idle. Truck runs now with the battery disconnected. Took it down the road and what do you know, the battery has enough charge to start the truck now. WTF??? That makes no sense to me that it just randomly started working. Wire going to the batter from the alt is still really hot. Not sure what that means.?.?

Wheeler
if the wire is the stock wire, heat means resistance that shouldnt be there, ie a bad connection somewhere. that lil 8 or 10 gauge wire is kinda marginal for the length, imho. if you can, replace it with 4 or 2 gauge wire and connect the stock alt wire to the positive batt terminal, as its what supplies juice to the factory fuse box. or if ya wanna do it on the cheap, just check and clean with a wire brush or file all the connections. also check all the wires for fraying, damage or corrosion

good luck!

Been there done that 3 times. I will check my voltage tonight on my 82 22R but 14.4 seems a tad low. I had to go back to an oem Toyota alternator because all of the non-Toyota ones would bench test fine but not produce enough of voltage to keep the battery charged. Have you had your battery tested as well to see if it is in fact good and will hold a charge?

You can do a search and find a few topics on this as well.

Good luck

I was thinking the same thing about the size of that wire, just didnt know if anyone else had those issues. Ill probably end up switching it out with some 4ga. I dont like the idea of that little wire carying the amps the alt put outs at that size and length, but figured Toyota knows more about what they are doing than I do hahaha. Ill replace it and see what happens tho.

Ive had the battery checked as well. Did it myself and at autozone. New alt and the truck died on me so i went to the Advance right around the corner and bought a new one just to limp home with. If you get a chance, do let me know what the alt puts out at idle. (I let mine warm to normal temp and then tested at idle at 14.4) Thanks

That's a dandy way to burn the alternator out.

From the rest of your description, I suspect your battery was very dead, and may well have a dying cell. That means the alternator had/has to work very hard to charge it (hence the heat), and that it doesn't want to take the charge (which is why it took so long to get charged up).
