why do you not want synthetic?

OK, I can go with syn oil, but I do not want to do it, because I read about possible leaking everywhere and IT IS expensive.

I already changed gasket set in the fuel pump...

Anybody with different experience, please share your minds!

Thanks,

Peter built in port quells sells the Baldwin $18.... something a piece. You can get Diesel oil there as well, both chevron della 400 and Shell

Synthetic oil is great stuff but there is nothing wrong with running dino. (Shell Rotella, Chevron Delo or Mobil Delvac) Diesel engines have been around a lot longer than synthetic oil and there are tractors from the '40s and '50s still chugging along on Dino oil. If you use dino oil, you just have to change it more often. I run all three dino oils in my four diesels and they all run great. (usually Rotella)

The only special case where I would use synthetic oil with a premium oil filter is if I was towing big loads over long distance with my Cummins 6BT. In that case, I would be running AMSOIL and a premium filter like Fleetguard/Mopar, etc. with extended oil change intervals recommended by AMSOIL.

P.S. - I'm not an AMSOIL dealer and have no affiliation with them. I just know a lot of diesel truckers that swear by it.

Amsoil is the best oil out there in my opinion. I run it in both of my vehicles and I notice a difference with it in the car big time...the engine just runs alot nicer and quiter. my poor old lifters sure appreciate it too.

OK, is it synth. or mineral?

Do we need special oil filter for synthetic?

Thanks,

No.

Hey guys, are you all changing the filter with each oil change, or every other change? Not sure what the stock interval and recommendation is. I change the oil every 5000kms and so far I've done 2 changes at $27 a filter, it's getting expensive!

Research has shown that you will do better by changing the oil every second time you change the filter, not the other way round.

I recall reading an article where two Opel 4-cyl engines were run for 180000 kms with the one changing oil and filter as per spec and the second had only filters changed.

The wear patterns at the end of the test were similar.

That's a good point about the price of the oil filter with the 4D55/56 engine. I've been changing it every 3-4,000 miles with the oil but it would probably make sense for me to switch to the AMSOIL diesel synthetic, use a NAPA Gold or Baldwin premium oil filter and change it at the AMSOIL recommended interval. (high)

Interesting.

So, the next question would be what happens to the 4D56 full of oil when you pull off the filter? Is there an anti-drainback valve that will make a mess, or just the usual oil change drip amount?

Still, I don't think I could bring myself to not change the oil.

when oil is the most important part of your engine. just bite the bullet and change it. Petro-Can DURON is Semi-synthetic. they have some weights that are full synthetic. and I think 15W40 is full synthetic, im not sure. But I just run the Amsoil 15W40 and man does my truck love it. I get it for free because my work buys 205L drums of it and they just let me take it when I need it haha.
