Need a Spot
Hi Guys...Just was wondering where I could get a hitch to mount to the flat "plate" on the back of my 92 Montero. I saw one the other day but the guy was doing 90, so I couldn't ask him. Any particular place or do I have to have it made? Which I can do, but would rather not...thanks...

What will you be towing? Will determine what kind of hitch you need and where you can get it.

Curt mfg makes a hitch that bolts onto the back. It is limited by design though to ~2000lbs. More than that, and you need to mount to the frame. I think it ran around $120 or so plus shipping when I bought mine about a year ago.

You should also check your '92's tow rating. For my '95 LS its only around 2500lbs for the end mounted configuration. Should be about the same, but theres always a chance its lower.

As the previous post said, it all comes down to what you intend to tow.

I made mine in my metal working class, cost nothing but some of my time. not pretty but solid, the bumper will rip off before it breaks.

I have a similar hitch from my Raider. Shipping cost could be high, but I'd make a great deal for you. I found a Confer unit that I've since mounted. You could also use a pintle hitch... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I just have a receiver tube mounted to the factory plate. I found a pintle bolt pattern receiver tube, but only two of the 4 bolt hole locations matched up. I drilled another pair, and used the lower pair for a couple of shackles to hook the safety chains up to. I towed a 3000lb boat plus 40 gallons of fuel at 7lb/gal plus the 900lb trailer from Lake Cumberland KY to NE GA, climbing over the Blue Ridge twice. No sweat, no bends, no breaks. Plate + receiver tube rated for 10000lbs. You have to use a drop hitch with this setup. I use the one that adjusts with the load on the ball, using a knuckle buster or 3/8" drive tool. Going to have to chop off some stinger length and redrill the pin hole to shorten it up about 3" though. Convertaballs are real nice, too, if you tow with both 2" and 1 7/8" hitches. I think the max hitch uses both frame and plate mounting. I had this one on my gen1LS, and can make a measured drawing if you want one (I feel like Norm)...

I bought something similar to this --
http://www.hitch-web.com/proDescrip.asp?ProductCode=9881&OID=8
I pull a 19.5' ski boat with it (3,000lb+ fully loaded). Technically, it's overloaded, both the hitch and the truck. But I've been more than satisfied with the performance of both.
