hello all Ok so I have had my eye on the SJ (1984) 2 door full sized cherokee with the 4.2l 258 motor,, OK so it has dana 44 in from and an AMC 20 in the rear. question #1, how strong is that rear axle, more like a dana 44 or more like a Dana 35, question #2 it has a carb on it which the electronic choke doesn't work, I have never worked on a carb before,, every car I have ever had was fuel injected) so should I just got for a reman carb or rebuild the old stock one,, after market claim to give more horse pwr??
Any pointers on this old girl would be a big help ML

Here is a link to a page that gives general info about axles. axle identification chart It has the ring gear sizes for dif axles and a little bit more info. The AMC 20 is a better axle than the 35, especially with one piece axles. The 35's I've heard are very problematic.

Oh yeah, is the carb a carter bbd?
I am getting a new carb soon and will be getting one from a ford with a manual choke.

The ring gear on an AMC 20 axle is actually a little bigger than the ring gear on a Dana 44 axle. The tubes are a little thinn3er on an AMC 20, but you can buy a cheap truss for that. For the axle shafts, you can even get the Warn full floater kit, which really beefs the hell out of it.
I've had mine rock crawling in KY with 35" BFG MTs, 4.56 gears, and Lock-Right. I'm more worried about my Dana 30 front axle, so I carry spare axle shafts for it.

The amc20 in a wag is one piece OE. The I6 and carb should do fine, get it tuned up and dialed in and see how you like it before "modifying" it.
