I rebuilt the starter on my wife's '97 4Runner. I followed the instructions on that link, but I could NOT get the dipstick tube apart, which in turn, wouldn't allow the starter to come free of the truck. I tried and tried and finally just rebuilt it in place. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" /> It made it a bit harder, but overall things went fine.

BTW, if you do a search, you'll see that you should never replace a Toyota starter with a rebuilt parts house unit. Buy the rebuild parts from Toyota and rebuild the one you have. The parts are cheap and the rebuild job is very simple. Getting the starter in and out is the hard part.
