How big of tire can you fit on a stock 98 TJ?

Im looking at getting a 2 or 2.5" budget lift, but im wondering if its possible I already have one..

My TJ is supposedly stock, with 31 inch tires on it. Is this possible with proper backspacing and such? Will a 2-2.5 inch lift allow me to fit 33's?
