gears are great! helps out ALOT on steep declines (don't have to use brakes anymore) inclines (just have to barely touch throttle). gives you so much more control. in my opinion, transfer gears are definately worth $1,500 ($1000 parts, $500 labor). just have to be careful when you have them in low without a front bumper or winch on the front of your truck on steep inclines b/c you can easily pop your entire front end off the ground.
