Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
Well I pick up a 1990 LS from the orginal owner with 109K miles, Leather, Moonroof and a bad motor yesterday. Its White body is near perfect, the darker brown Leather has no cracks or tears, just worn on the left side drivers seat. Towed(what a pain)her right to the rebuilders for a new motor. I have a few questions......
- Anything special I should be concerned with on the rebuild? - The front bumper is dented up and a bit bent, is there a replacement option? - The tail and turn signals are cracked, where can I find replacements. -Anything else I should be concerned with ????
Thanks I'll keep you all updated.

- Anything special I should be concerned with on the rebuild? Yeah, dont get a Jasper rebuilt engine put in. Get a good quality shop to rebuild it.
I just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.

In addition to the engine... -Examine the radiator and if needed have it rodded or even re-cored. If it's re-cored consider a 3 row instead of 2 row setup. -Change all the drivetrain fluids (differentials, transmission, transfer case) -Relube all the lube points. There are over a dozen zirk fittings to hit.

Your bumper options include stock replacement, Don and ARB units. Don is on this Board.

The most critical item to check when rebuilding the 3.0 is the clamping range on the head bolts. If the heads or block have been milled for flatness, the head bolts may bottom out (giving a false torque reading) before reaching their proper clamping force. Some here have bottom tapped the block, checked clamping ranges, and even slightly ground off head bolts to make sure the head gaskets are properly clamped.

Probably can. The process I listed was what Frank did. The most important thing is to be aware that several memebers have had head gasket failures with rebuilt motors. Through Frank's effort, this community has pretty much determined that lack of head bolt clamping force was the problem. Make sure your rebuilder checks to make sure the head bolts will clamp before bottoming out.
