In the early 90s I had a Mitsu Fuso with box on it for a business I was running. I also had an Isuzu flatbed with five speed.
The one issue I had with the Fuso being that it was an automatic and the turbo was the early non wastegate style, When starting up a particular steep hill it would not come on boost till about 1800 rpm, but due to the hill I could generally just get to 1600 so I was stuck there at a slow speed dreaming for another 100 or so revs to spool the turbo so I could accelerate. On some days it would come on boost and it would climb right through the gears.

The Isuzu would spool up down around 1200 revs and had a very nice gear selection as long as you did not want to get over 67 MPH.
If I ever decide to get into another Fuso again I will be sure to get the wastegated turbo so you can get going from a stop.
In perspective the Mitsu was a far better truck, cab and chassis wise, the Isuzu was a better handling truck but that would be due to the lower center of gravity due to being a flat bed but the cab was shaking itself apart.
