the bumpers i made mounted to that, plus the front most body mount plate (top and front side). it's pretty sturdy, but i wouldn't trust it alone, to hold a winch under a heavy pull or even to hold together in a wreck. and it's a good place to bolt a bumper on. i would leave them unless you plan to weld a custom bumper to the frame (in other words, something stronger than just bolting one on).

I'm not sure about years prior to 1998 but I can tell you that from 1998 - 2002 there are NO airbag sensors in the front bumper assembly. All the sensors are contained in the ADU which is located under the front console. There are pendulum type sensors which sense impact.

But again, that's for 1998 and newer. I don't know about prior years and if you DO run into sensors in the front bumper I would leave them alone.

These are the crumple zones for a front end collision. They crumple absorbing and dissipating energy.

When I did my body lift, I cut the front section off of these crumple zones. The section on the top rite at the point where they neck down and then neck back out. In the valley portion. It also kind of lines up with the bottom section of the "gater teeth" on the sides.

It only cuts about 1" off and this is enough to clear the bumper to put it back into the stock looking location.

I'm going to mount the tube bumper and I'll just rest it against the front of these and then bolt a bracket to where the bumper bolts to the frame, then weld the bracket to tube.
Will probably do this Friday 6/15 or Sat 6/16. My brother-in-law has a welder and plasma cutter.
Will document with pics.

Well, took the SawsAll to those bumper things:


Hollow boxes.

Took this SmittyBilt bumper ($50 on craigslist) for a 94 Tahoe and cut the 3/8" frame attachments off


Welded a some homemade brackets and here's where it's at so far. It should finish tomorrow except for something to hide the ugly body work behind the bumper.


Need 2 more brackets and may cut the tubes (maybe just the bottom one) shorter, so they don't get to close to the tire.

Would have been faster but the welder wasn't close to the car so we had to make a couple of trips.

Been wanting to do that with a tube bumper. Looks good, but I'm thinking maybe one a bit smaler , say Jeep size so the tubes wrap in tighter.
