Hey guys and gals, I recently put a new head (pro-topline) and headgasket on my 1990 Isuzu trooper. After assembely it dosen't hold an idle and will stall unless above 1500-2000. It also smokes like crazy and I believe this to be the system to the right top of the engine with the tubes that go to the exhaust ports on the head. Any ideas, ways to troubleshoot or any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Chris-scarboy a

Check to see if you got all the vacuum lines, ground straps and the timing is on. Mine smoked for awhile after a new head from all the leftover antifreeze in the exhaust when the old head cracked.

Is the smoke white, black, or blue-ish?

I would say your head gasket is leaking. Did you use an OEM gasket? Many say to use nothing else . . .

White would indicate coolant is getting into the CC. The most common causes for that are a cracked head or bad head gasket. Given you put a new head on it, I'd side with Steve on this one.

Isn't there a verifyable test for coolant in the exhaust?
You can always try re-torqueing the head bolts too. I would do this before pulling it apart.

Isn't there a verifyable test for coolant in the exhaust? I've sniff the exhaust to see if it has a sweet smell. I'm not going to officially recommend doing that as it probably kills brain cells... which explains some stuff about me

I put a new headgasket on as well, but it was a felpro. I might not have all the vacuum lines on right as well. when I pull the oil fill cap with the engine running I get lots of white smoke as well pouring out of the hole. I don't know what to do.....

The first thing that I would do is run a good compression test. The symptoms that you describe right now don't make it sound good, but you need some real data to help you make a decision.
