Getting the Wheeling Fever
How close should I let my pistons get to the head on my 22RE?

I have read that I want no more than .060" between the piston and head. I have also read that I will have a non quench assembly if I have more than .040" between the piston and head.

I have 61cc combustion chambers and need all the help I can get to raise the compression.

Will .030" quench be safe for a cast piston engine?

The block will get decked this week, so I am trying to decide how much to take off.

Thanks
Ken

Might contact engnbldr - or do a search, he's got a great post on quench.

Just remember to deck the front cover along with the block and consider an adjustable timing gear if you're really taking material off the block or head.

Other than that, sorry I can't answer your question!

Thank you for the replies.

I have read this and many other EB posts and have learned a lot. The head, crank, rods, pistons and rebuild kit that I am using, came from EB and very good quality and a bargain.

In one of his posts he stated that "anything outside of .040" now becomes what we in the business call a "Non-quench" assembly."

This tells me that I should have no more than .040" space between the head and piston. Since the head has 61cc chambers, and the pistons have a 5.4cc dish, I need to get the piston as close as safely possible to the head to get decent compression.

If .030" quench will be safe, I can get about 9.4:1 compression.
