Need a Spot
Hello folks. Glad to be a member of the board. Having just acquired my first Kia, I have a question or two regarding cylinder head application and/or exchange. The vehicle is a 1995 Sportage, 5 speed, 4x4, 2.0 litre, SOHC. After examination, it appears the cylinder head is cracked in the area of the #1 cylinder (pushes coolant out of the radiator when trying to start the truck). Is it possible to swap the cylinder head for a DOHC head, or is that not possible. Assuming that not being a possibility, does anyone on the board have a useable SOHC cylinder head for this truck? Any other cylinder heads interchangeable with the SOHC? Thanks in advance, David.

You can not replace the SOHC with the DOHC head many things are different. You may have a bad head gasket causing this problem.

I would have to agree with Airdale that it cannot easily be done. I believe some of the castings in the block on the front are different. Also the water pump uses a different timing gear.

Airdale, AxeMan, Thanks for the information. It's possible that the problem may be only a head gasket. I have not removed the head as of yet, just trying to line up a head in the event I may need one. Anyone with a useable SOHC , 2.0 head, let me know. Thanks, David

http://www.cylinder-heads.com/ have rebuilt heads their heads are complete with cams they should have a sohc head the dohc head is $375 plus $20 shipping sohc should be the same price. good luck check to see if a good headgasket will be the fix but if the head is cracked it will need to replaced I think your head even if cracked can be returned to cylinder-head they are master rebuilders

bombardj1, Thanks for that cylinder head info. I'll check with them on the availability if I need a head. Thanks, David
