You might remember I ran my Tahoe out in Moab one year...and it did OK. But it is big and heaaaaavy, as noted. The width wasn't a tremendous handicap out there with so few trees. Anywhere east of the Great Plains it would be something of a handicap.
If you do get a Tahoe/Suburban, I'll trade you my rear axle with ECTED locker for yours plus some cash

I think I'd look at a 96 or 97 Trooper LS. The FJ80s are nice, but on the inside they aren't a heck of a lot larger than the trooper. The fold down 3rd row seating devours cargo space. The tail gate is nice though.
MY wife and I were discussing cargo area of the TLCs earlier today. Basically, she commented that the TLCs seemed to be relatively tight inside. Its more of a a purpose built vehicle. IN fact, I think I'm going to take over daily driving duty of her UZJ-100.

I would go full size, it seems the best option. The only other consideration would be a good offroad trailer. An FJ with a trailer would be a great package. The only thing it would lack would be offroad abbility, but its marginal. You wont complain about power, room, or comfort. Scott F.

Um, yeah. Unfortunately, they only have 2 doors, and dont fit the criteria. Great rigs though. The Amigo is NOT a station wagon thankyouverymuch.

Um yeah, some people dont have the deep pockets, nor relationships that you have there buddy. I've been down the brand new rig and modify route. I would prefer not to do that again. Something relatively inexpensive to get into and do eventual mods to get it to a desireable state.

Take a 1 ton longbed chevy and stick a 3+3 cab on it with a very short bed. This would be shorter than a suburban and give you plenty of inside room and more space in a short bed than a trooper has behind the seats.Top it with a custom camper top and you'll have a unique ride.

That's kinda what I was kicking around, but not sure of the wheelbase, IIRC that is ~119". Oh well, more room for double cases and not too short driveshafts. Even better with a diesel. Right now, it is in idea generation mode, and a bit away from fruition. Thanks again for all the brainstorming and outside the box ideas.
