Has anyone here tried running the larger Supra AFM on their trucks?

Haha, that's my old AFM (the one Ratlabguy took the pics of). Works pretty good, probably be better with a bored TB and plenum, but I noticed a little butt dyno increase <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/butwiggle.gif" alt="" />

Did you by anychance check the spark plugs to see if the engine was running any leaner?

It seems like that AFM combined with ported head, larger injectors and larger T.B. could work well together.

Is the truck still running well?

I still have it and use it today.
My motor is bored 40 over and has LCE headers. Stock head though.
Seems to work well for me. Yeah, it's hard to say if it really provide much, but it doe "feel" like it at least.
In conjunctio nw/ the 3" cone filter, it *deinitely* makes the intake/head noise louder, you can hear it sucking in from in inside the cabin even.

I have na auto tranny, 4.988 gear and 32s... it's pretty well tuned... and on mostly highway trips w/ easy foot I get 19.5 mpgs. Round town its about 17 or so.Sometimesit does feel like the A/D ratioo isn't quite right.. however I'm using an aftermarket Bosch O2 sensor w/ the uinversal plug (because I'm an idiot) and that could easily be the root of that problem...

I have a 89 3.0 and I think my afm is going out when ever it rains truck runs like crap.
I bought 2 AFMs 1 from a 88 camery and one from a 88 pick up both 4 bangers do you know if the will work with the 3.0?

To the question-my plugs never showed signs of lean combustion, but you never really know without hooking it up to a tailpipe sniffer or wideband.

What are the differences in all of the different AFM's? Is ther any difference other than the part number?

It seems that they have a different part# for each year of our trucks.

Could it just be good luck that the Supra AFM worked in this case?

I posted one of the original write-ups of this swap on my site back in '99 or '00, although the original idea wasn't mine.

There are different part numbers because there are small changes in the circuit boards of the different AFMs - even if they look the same externally, there are some subtle differences in the slope of their output signals. As long as you don't mix the "early" style (pre-'88.5) AFM with the "late" style (pos-'88.5) ECU, or vice versa, the AFMs are cross compatible. In other words, it's OK to use a 1987 AFM on a 1986 22RE, but don't use a 1990 AFM on a 1986 22RE, or a 1986 AFM on a 1990 22RE.

As for the larger Supra/Cressida AFMs, the 1982 5MGE AFM is plug-and play, because the output signal runs from low to high. For the other years, the output signal runs from high to low, so as the flapper door swings open more, the output signal decreases, meaning that the engine will run increasingly leaner, exactly the opposite of what you want!! To use one of the 83-85 5MGE AFMs, you need to swap out the stock circuit board and swap in the circuit board from your stock 22RE AFM.

I don't know if this clears things up or makes them more confusing, but that's some of the background story on the AFM differences.
